THE LIGHTHOUSE by Peter Maxwell Davies will be the first opera presented in TDO’s Chamber Opera Series. Performances are scheduled for March 16, 17 and 18, 2012, at the Wyly Theater. The chamber opera includes a prologue and one act (75 minutes, without intermission.)

THE LIGHTHOUSE was premiered in 1980 as part of the Edinburgh Festival. The piece is based on an incident described by Craig Mair in his book on the Stevenson family, lighthouse engineers, of Edinburgh, concerning the disappearance of the three lighthouse-keepers from the Flannan Isles lighthouse, in unexplained circumstances, in 1900.

This production will be an artistic collaboration with the Dallas Theater Center. Kevin Moriarty, Artistic Director of DTC, will direct the chamber opera. Beowulf Boritt, award-winning designer and frequent collaborator of Mr. Moriarty, will design the production.

Nicole Paiement will conduct THE LIGHTHOUSE for TDO. She serves as Artistic Director of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, New Music Ensemble; she is also the Artistic Director of the BluePrint Project, a series focused on building new music for the city of San Francisco; and Artistic Director of Ensemble Parallèle (EP) since 1994, a professional ensemble, dedicated to contemporary chamber opera and multidisciplinary projects. Pairment will be the second female conductor in TDO’s 55-year history.
