Korngold: The Lost Musician?

Using the opera Die tote Stadt as a touchstone, panelists will discuss Erich Wolfgang Korngold as a Viennese musical prodigy and composer bridging old-world compositions and Hollywood film scores. Themes will include the exodus of composers and artists who fled Europe for the United States due to Nazi threat, the classification of artists as degenerate due to subject matter and Jewish ancestry, and how the Holocaust affected the direction of classical music in both Europe and in Hollywood.

Musical selections from Die tote Stadt will be performed by Morgan Smith and Angela Turner Wilson.

Panelists will include Keith Cerny, The Dallas Opera, General Director and CEO
Dr. Timothy Jackson, Professor of Music Theory, University of North Texas
Barton Weiss, Associate Professor of Film/Video, University of Texas Arlington and 3 Stars Jewish Cinema
Moderated by Cantor Richard Cohn, Temple Emanu-El

All seats are General Admission and tickets are $5. Free parking is available at The Jewish Community Center.
